Caitlyn’s phone buzzed from her pile of her clothes, but she ignored it as she eased down into the Boiling River’s hot mineral water. This was just what she needed. Renegade napped in the shade of a nearby bench where Caitlyn had left her things. Gradually, she let her mind play back the events of the morning.

Whoever was trying to hurt the judge must have cut those brake lines in the middle of the night. She’d had Renegade sweep his car before he got in that morning, but he was sniffing for explosives. She tried hard to remember if she’d seen any liquid under the car, but the driveway was constructed of two long strips of cement for the tires, and natural grass filled the gaps. Even if she had looked, which in all honesty she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have noticed any fluid.

Her phone buzzed again, and not wanting to miss an important call, she dragged herself out of the hot water. When she realized it was Colt, she called him back. “Hey. Is everything alright?”

“Yeah, but you’ll never guess what I came across this week.” Colt told Caitlyn all about the cattle rustlers and the packets of rockeT he’d found at the high school and at the rustler’s trailer home.

“It’s got to be Ray Burroughs. Don’t you think?” Caitlyn stood dripping water in the dirt.

“I’m betting it is. He’s certainly still in the area, but where?”

“Have your suspects said where they got it?”

“I haven’t been able to talk to them yet. They lawyered up.”

“Maybe you can offer them a deal for information. Burroughs is a much bigger fish.”

“Especially if he’s hooked in with Trova from New York.”

Caitlyn’s skin prickled with apprehension. “The mob boss’s tentacles seem to reach everywhere.”

“Yeah. Are you on lunch?”

“No, actually I was soaking in the Boiling River.” Caitlyn laughed.

“Tough duty. Where’s the judge?”

“Sam’s here in Mammoth now and he’s finally taking a shift. I had a crazy morning, too.”
